Gospel Principles for Kids Lesson 10: Scriptures

Scriptures

We had a good time with this lesson. I pulled out all the scriptures that we use in our family scripture reading as well as some flannel board stories. The kids were excited when the saw all of those things.

The Scriptures Are Available to Us Today

I showed them a map of the world and talked about how God speaks to people in every land because we are all His children and He loves everyone. I showed them where the Bible was written, then the Book of Mormon. We then talked about Joseph Smith and how he also kept a record of revelation from God and it is called the Doctrine and Covenants. I pointed out to them the areas where that record was written.

2 Nephi 29:11 For I command all men, both in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them; for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is written.

I then asked the kids what their favorite scripture story is and we took turns telling our favorite stories from the scriptures.

I ended with my testimony about why we have scriptures and reminded them of the story of Lehi sending his sons back to wicked Jerusalem for scriptures and how if we want to know what God wants us to do we need to study and learn from the scriptures.  They are our guide back to Him.

Biggest News Since the Resurrection of Jesus Christ!

God has again called prophets and has revealed another testament of Jesus Christ, called the Book of Mormon.  This is the biggest news since the resurrection of Jesus Christ!  He is a living God who is still involved in our lives today!  Love this video:

The Book of Mormon is for the scholarly and the uneducated, the rich and the poor, the hopeful and the demotivated.  This book is for those who want to see a change in themselves and a change in the world.  This book is for all of us.  It is another testament of Jesus Christ!

Request your free copy here.
Christ visits the Americas after his resurrection.

Christ gathered the children, blessed them, and they felt his love for them.

We can all feel of that love today!

Young Women Personal Progress Resources

For the value "virtue" in the Young Women Program the girls have to read the Book of Mormon, so I put together a value reading chart so that while they are reading they can also complete 31 of their value experiences!  Most have a few additional verses and then require journaling.  The ones that are underlined require doing something everyday for 2 or 3 weeks, so they'd need to do something besides the reading and journaling.  Just click the link "reading chart" to snag it.  Let me know if you want the docs to change it up.  I also have an excel file with all the reading by value experience.

This mini book can be used as a quick reference for what they need to do along with the reading.  If you're not familiar with mini books, click the link and prepare to be amazed!

I also coded this time chart I found online so at a glance, the girls can know what else they need to do for each value experience and the time they'll need to complete it.

Resources for Mom's with little children

I have found some sets I'm quite excited about to help with scripture reading in my family.

Book of Mormon Stories with pictures in the text for children to help read with quizzes at the end to help facilitate discussion.

It looks like you can purchase an additional license for $10 and I can send you the file.  It requires printing and assembling..

Book of Mormon Activities includes interactive activities that go along with Book of Mormon stories.  I think this is a great way for kids to remember the stories and enjoy them!

I have only ordered the first one thus far and my 3-year-old loves it!  It is helpful to me that she wants to read scriptures.  I'm waiting for my birthday to get the second one, which is okay because it may be better suited to children a little older than ours.

Update:  I finally made the second one for my family and LOVE it! My girls love it and want to read more and more! It's teaching these stories with the five senses in a hands on way! (Ok, you got me, we don't TASTE it!) I don't know the person who created it but I'm so glad she did! I can get additional licenses for 50% off if you want me to order for you. It's a lot of cutting and you have to laminate and bind it.. fyi. But it will also last a few years because some of it requires reading and writing skills which my girls are yet to acquire. I highly recommend it!
